Omarzai's 116-run blitz seals series 2-0 for Afghanistan; Raza's ton in vain
Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by 19 runs in the second T20I at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, sealing the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare. Batting first, Afghanistan posted 221/7 and then restricted Zimbabwe to 202/5. The victory was not merely about the 19-run margin, but about the resilience that turned a broken innings into a record total.
The start was a nightmare for Afghanistan. After four overs they were 5 for 4, with the top order back in the pavilion and the team visibly frozen under pressure. At 38 for 5, a big total looked unrealistic. But the sixth-wicket partnership changed the course of the match.
Azmatullah Omarzai produced one of the most memorable innings of his career, smashing 116 off 50 balls with 12 sixes and reaching his maiden T20I hundred off just 44 balls. His strike rate of 232 is extraordinary even by elite T20 finisher standards. On Sharjah's short boundaries his shots kept flying out of the ground and replacement balls had to be called for.
His composure under pressure was equally notable. He did not rush against the hat-trick ball and his shot selection improved steadily thereafter. That is why the innings was not just an exhibition of power hitting but a lesson in reading the situation.
At the other end, Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai accelerated quickly, making 52 off 27 balls at a strike rate of around 192. The pair added 142 for the sixth wicket, the highest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in T20Is. It is Ijaz's second consecutive fifty of the series, having made one in the opener, suggesting emerging middle-order support, though the sample is still small.
Afghanistan scored 176 in the last ten overs and 65 in the last three. Rashid Khan chipped in with 25 off six balls, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman and the lower order contributed useful cameos. Reaching 221/7 from 5 for 4 ranks among the most dramatic comebacks in T20I history.
Chasing, Zimbabwe started briskly but lost wickets at regular intervals. At the halfway mark they were 82 for 5, with the match effectively gone. No top or middle-order batter could play a substantial innings and the pressure kept mounting.
Captain Sikandar Raza held one end, making an unbeaten 106 off 56 balls at the age of 40, at a strike rate of nearly 189, becoming the oldest centurion in T20I history. His unbroken 120-run stand with Tafadzwa Tsiga reduced the margin of defeat but could not bridge the gap.
For Zimbabwe with the ball, Kundai Matigimu was excellent early, taking a double-wicket maiden and pushing Afghanistan onto the back foot. But the same seamer proved expensive at the death, and Brad Evans conceded 27 in his final over. Zimbabwe's death-over plans collapsed completely, and that proved decisive.
Afghanistan's bowling variety—Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fareed Ahmad and Omarzai—came good. In this match Rashid became the first bowler to take 200 men's T20I wickets. That milestone is durable, while his 25 off six balls is an outlier and should not be read as a batting transformation.
Sharjah has traditionally favoured batters and this match was no exception. The ball travelled fast and cleared the ropes repeatedly. A total of 221 was strong but not untouchable. The venue functions as a familiar adopted home for Afghanistan, and they exploited that advantage through the series.
Analytically, Afghanistan's win is impressive but structurally risky. A powerplay of 5 for 4 cannot be rescued by the lower order every time. Against stronger new-ball attacks this top order looks vulnerable, and that will remain a concern going forward.
Zimbabwe's biggest problems are death bowling and middle-order support. Raza fought alone at one end, but repeating such an innings at 40 is not realistic. Giving opportunities to newcomers Tsiga and Masekesa is the right long-term move, but immediate depth remains thin.
Omarzai's innings could also matter for his franchise career. T20 leagues covet all-rounders who can hit hard lower down and bowl a few overs. Still, this is the impact of one innings, not a lasting valuation.
Looking at the series, Afghanistan have shown steady improvement. Ijaz's fifty in the opener and Omarzai's century here highlight batting depth, while the experience of Rashid and Mujeeb provides bowling stability. Zimbabwe need to strengthen their middle order and fix their death bowling in the remaining game.
The figures in this report rest on a single source and are subject to independent verification. Declaring Omarzai or Ijaz a permanent star on one match would be premature; the next five to ten innings will reveal the real trend. Likewise, the shelf life of Raza's century may be limited. The next match of the series will confirm or contradict these signals.
